Easy Pizza Base Recipe

Ingredients

1 tbs dry yeast
1 tsp caster sugar
1 cup luke warm water
2 ½ cups 00 flour (or bread flour)
1 tsp sea salt
1 tbs olive oil

Method

Combine the yeast, sugar and water in a small bowl.Mix and set aside for 5 minutes.

Combine in a large bowl the flour, salt and oil. Mix and make a well in the centre.

When lots of tiny bubbles appear on the surface of the yeast mixture, pour into the well in the flour mixture. Mix well with floured hands and knead the dough lightly for 3 – 4 minutes (in the bowl is fine).

Cover the bowl with a tea towel and set aside in a warm place for 30 mins.

If it’s winter time or a bit chilly, you may need to place in your oven on the lowest possible setting. Some ovens have a keep warm setting which is perfect. In this time, the dough will double in size.

Remove the dough from the bowl, cut into 2 or 3 sections (depending on how many bases* you’d like to make) and knead one section at a time on a floured bench, just a couple of times to loosen it up. Then roll out with a rolling pin to your desired size and add your toppings.

*Depending on how thick you like your pizza bases, this recipe will make 2 thick or 3 thin 12” bases.

There are a vast array of toppings.  In fact, you can use almost anything on a pizza… see below for some inspiration

Pizza Topping Ideas

Our take on the classic Supreme

Firstly prepare your base using our easy pizza base recipe. If you’re going to being cooking in a pizza oven you’ll also need a pizza peel, this is a paddle type accessory to lift and place the pizza into your pizza oven. If however you’re using a pizza stone in your Weber, you can prepare your base directly onto one of the silver trays that came with your stone, you place your stone onto a roasting trivet while the weber is heating up – do this according to the directions in your stone cookbook, again this came with your weber pizza stone. You can purchase additional silver trays separately, this way you’re able to get another pizza ready while one is cooking.

Toppings

Tomato paste
Garlic
Herbs (choose your favourite)
Chilli paste (optional)
Cheese grated (pizza cheese is the best or mix parmesan, cheddar &  mozzarella)
Onion chopped finely
Ham diced or sliced into strips
Bacon diced or sliced into strips
Salami sliced thinly
Pineapple pieces
Capsicum

Method

Add in to your tomato paste, some garlic and herbs; we like to use oregano and add some chilli paste if you’d like it spicy (this makes your pizza all that more interesting). Now spread over your pizza base to the thickness you desire. Starting with a little grated cheese, place a small amount of each topping onto your prepared base finishing it off with some more cheese. Now slide a you can cook this one in your pizza oven to the directions that came with the oven, or if you’re using a pizza stone in your Weber you’ll need to prepare your base directly onto . Generally these pizzas will take approx. 12 minutes to cook. Just remember the trick is not to pile on too many toppings, you want it cook all the way through and end up a little crispy but not burnt.
